What are some of the things you should be looking out for on your car as a Porsche owner? While Porsches are high-quality, reliable cars, they do have some common faults you should be aware of.

Cooling is a regular issue for a variety of Porsche models including the Panamera, Cayenne, and Boxster 986. There are a few different reasons for this, and it can be a tricky problem to spot.
This is normally down to a failed seal in the “valley” of the engine. Rather than dripping out onto your garage floor (a tell-tail sign you need to visit a Porsche repair shop), it tends to pool on the top of the engine between the cylinders.
One sign you might be able to notice is a musty smell coming from the engine, and of course, if your engine is running hot, then you should find a Porsche mechanic to take a look at it.
Intermediate Shaft Bearing
IMS – intermediate shaft bearing failure is a commonly known problem on Porcshe 996, 986, and 997 models. If you do experience IMS failure, then it can be catastrophic for your engine, so it’s always a good idea to get your car checked out by a Porsche Repair shop like Edgestone Automotive, as they’ll know exactly what to look for.
This is generally caused by a washed-out bearing which causes the IMS to fail, leading to huge damage to your engine. The good news is, this is a serviceable part, so if it’s not already been replaced, it’s a relatively easy fix.
If you’ve got an older manual Porsche, then you might find you have difficulties getting it into gear. This is often caused by worn synchros that cause a strange grinding sound when you shift.
It’s often said that modern Porsche transmissions are unserviceable, but this isn’t the case. An experienced mechanic at a Porsche repair shop will be able to service your transmission and ensure it’s in good working order.
If you have an M96 or M97 engine, then you may be aware of “the deadly knocking noise.” This is a symptom of a common problem with these engines – cylinder scoring.
Cylinder scoring could be caused in a few different ways, but it’s generally due to wear in the piston rings and liners that leads to the piston wobbling. This results in the piston skirt dragging against the cylinder, causing the scoring.
The main symptom of this problem is a rhythmic knocking noise that starts on the passenger side. If you hear this noise, then it’s time to get to a Porsche repair shop, as this can be a serious problem.
Check Engine Light
Many 911 models get problems with sensors that cause the check engine light to turn on. Often, it’s not a big issue, and a quick check by a Porsche mechanic can sort it out.
On the other hand, you may find your engine runs rough or lacks some power. This can be a result of a misfire due to worn spark plugs, a crack in the ignition coils, or simply an oil leak.
If your engine is misfiring, then it’s a clear sign you should get your car checked out by an experienced Porsche repair shop.
